About Our Natural Stone Slabs
Most of what Fine's Gallery makes begins as a slab. This category sells that material directly: the panel itself, before it becomes a mantel, a vanity top, or a carved surround. The stone program behind it is the same one behind the rest of the catalog. That means nearly forty named marbles, onyxes, travertines, limestones, and granites — White Carrara, Statuary White, Calacatta, Breccia Viola, Michelangelo Portoro, Nero Marquina, and the honey and green onyxes among them. What stands on the showroom floor is a rotating selection, and stone that is not in stock can be discussed as a custom order. Slabs are specified differently from carved goods. Figure, veining, and ground color vary from block to block and piece to piece, so the slab you select is the slab you receive. These are chosen with your eyes, not from a model number. Adjacent pieces cut in sequence from a single block can be book-matched, so a vein runs unbroken across a wall or opens symmetrically across a pair of tabletops. Onyx adds a property the other stones do not have: it transmits light, so a backlit panel reads as a lantern rather than a surface. Pieces documented in stock now run from a 48-inch panel to sheets approaching 110 inches wide, in thicknesses of three-quarters of an inch to one inch. The applications run wider than the word slab suggests. Indoors, designers specify stone panels for book-matched feature walls, fireplace surrounds and hearths, kitchen counters and island tops, waterfall ends and bar tops. They also use them for vanity tops, shower and tub surrounds, backsplashes, flooring and floor medallions, stair treads and risers, window sills and thresholds, and dining, console, and coffee tabletops. Outdoors, in the harder and denser stones: terrace paving, pool coping and surrounds, outdoor kitchen surfaces, and clad garden walls. Slabs also become the flat elements inside other work in this catalog — the top of a pedestal, the shelf of a console, the plinth beneath a statue. Because every slab is one specific piece of stone, this is a category worth seeing before committing. The Bonita Springs showroom holds the current inventory, where veining can be read at full size in daylight. Pieces can be sequenced or quoted for a project from there, and the gallery takes custom orders for a stone, dimension, or thickness that is not on the floor.
