Bronze is made by melting two
different metals and mixing them. The two metals used are
copper and tin. Copper, by itself would be too soft to make
statues from. Tin is much to brittle and breaks too easily.
But if you mix a little bit of tin into the copper it becomes
bronze which is much harder and at the same time much less
brittle.
Bronze sculpture casting is a technique of extreme antiquity.
The Greeks and Chinese mastered the Cire Perdue ( lost wax
bronze sculpture process ) which was revived in the Renaissance
and widely practiced until modern times. Little Greek sculpture
in bronze has survived, apparently because the metal was
later melted down for other purposes, but the material itself
resists exposure better than stone and was preferred by
the Greeks for their extensive art of public sculpture.
Bronze metal can also be cast in solid, hammered, carved
or incised forms.
